Splošna Plovba was established on October 22nd, 1954. The company operated two cargo vessels in the Mediterranean and a fleet of smaller coasters for transporting passengers and cargoes in the coastal trade.

Motorsailer BURJA of wooden construction, was registered for short coastal trade. Splošna Plovba acquired the vessel upon establishment in 1954. She was of 89.19 gross register tons, had 28 bunks for passengers, and a deadweight of 180 tons. BURJA carried passengers/tourists, and occasionally the students of the Nautical school were taken on board for practical seafaring lessons. She was sold in 1964.
Motorsailer LABOR of wooden construction was employed for transporting various cargoes in short and long coastal trade. The students of the Nautical school carried out their nautical practice on board. LABOR is seen here during repairs in the Piran shipyard.

The Piran shipyard operated within Splošna Plovba as a repair workshop plant from the 1st of June 1956 until the 1st of January 1961, and was situated at the location of today’s Bernardin hotel complex.
During that period the shipyard was modernized and from wooden ships advanced to building modern steel vessels and servicing larger oceangoing vessels.
