The main characteristics of the tramp trade:

  • ships are employed for transporting cargoes in international shipping without schedules, without predetermined ports or routes;
  • contracts for transporting cargoes are commonly concluded for every new voyage and usually for a full and complete cargo. Shippers, loading and discharging ports constantly change;
  • an individual ship may be employed on time charter or voyage charter basis;
  • the vessels "follow" cargoes, they are employed where cargoes are positioned, under the best terms possible.
